CONSERVE AND SUSTAINABLY USE THE OCEANS, SEAS AND MARINE RESOURCES FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
There are a number of organizations in Geneva working on ocean issues primarily from the trade and marine conservation perspectives.
Through its Committee on Trade and Environment, the WTO looks at how trade can support global efforts to better manage the world’s oceans and marine resources, to address illegal, unreported and unregulated fshing, and to negotiate fsheries subsidies.
The Asia Oceana regional initiative for the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) engages participants/stakeholders and coordinate the observation infrastructure, leveraging existing cooperation and conducting joint projects under the intergovernmental mechanism of GEO.
The ocean’s (SDG 14) delicate ecosystem is crucial for regulating the planet’s climate (SDG 13). In addition, it is an important source of nutrition (SDG 2) and employment (SDG 8) globally.
